The CSU-Pueblo wrestling team kicked off the 2011 season with its annual Red-Blue Intra-squad meet Wednesday night at Massari Arena. The Blue team won a close decision 34-25 over the Red team.

The meet started with 125-pound wrestler, senior Lyle Evans, who defeated sophomore Kenny Porter in a 6-4 decision, and 133-pound junior Saul Guerrero pinning redshirt freshman Ryan Kirby 1:54 into the first period. These decisions helped the Blue team jump out to an early 9-0 lead.

Perhaps the closest and most competitive match of the night came after freshman Matt Addington overcame sophomore Levi Jutila’s third period comeback, with an escape that tied the match at 1-1. Addington defeated Julita 3-1 on a takedown in the first overtime.

The Blue team separated themselves from the Red squad 28-15 after consecutive pins from 165-pound freshman Dominic Montoya and 174-pound senior Kyle Johnson.

However, Red squad inched back into the match when 174-pounder Joe Girdon and 197-pounder landed pins against their opponents to bring Red within one point of the Blue squad, 28-27.

However, a three period match between heavyweights Kimball Jordan for the Red team and Bill Gray for the Blue saw Gray pulling out the victory in three periods, 8-2, to propel Blue to a 34-27 victory.

Head coach Dax Charles hoped the match prepared the boys for the upcoming season and hopes to see injured wrestlers, most notably senior leader Patrick Carey, get back to full health and wrestling soon. Carey missed the intra-squad due to an ankle injury.

The ThunderWolves officially opened up their season this weekend in Laramie, Wyo. At the University of Wyoming to compete in the Cowboy open.
