The ThunderWolves women’s soccer team had high hopes of finishing a disappointing season with a win on senior day. The Pack wrapped up the 2011 season with a devastating 3-2 loss in overtime Sunday, Oct. 30, against the 23rd ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers.
The ThunderWolves overcame an early goal after Oredigger sophomore forward Anna Evans scored a perfect shot in the top right corner, beating Pack goalkeeper Savannah Thompson. They retaliated quickly, however, taking advantage of a corner kick that was tucked away confidently by senior Gabby Gonzalez.
The goal gave the Pack some momentum and proved they came to play in honor of their seniors. The goal took the offensive monkey off their back. It was their second goal in the last four games, having only mustered one tie between the four matches.
Both teams kept the pace up through the entire first half and gathered chances one after another. The Pack survived a scare when an Oredigger player busted free for a wide open breakaway but was met quickly by Thompson, who made a solid save to keep the game level.
After immense pressure from both the Orediggers and ThunderWolves, the games next breakthrough came in a Pack goal. Senior midfielder Melissa Christiansen played a long pass to a wide open Pack player. Sophomore Alicia Irwin took the pass on a bounce and gave the Pack their first lead of the game, putting a win for the Pack within reach by halftime.
Although the Pack was in the lead, it was clear which team made the most of their opportunities in the first half. The Orediggers ended the half with more than twice as many shots at the ThunderWolves but found they struggled to beat Thompson and the tough Pack defense.
Leading isn’t something the Pack have had much chance to experience this season and they struggled to find another good scoring opportunity in the second half, as it was dominated by the Orediggers. The potent attack of the girls from Mines was on an impressive display.
They outshot the ThunderWolves 13-3 and scored an equalizing goal 23 minutes into the half. The Pack stood strong and fought to find themselves in overtime, but the Orediggers continued to dominate. They finally finished off the Pack and put an end to the long season when Megan Woodworth scored to end the game.
The Pack ended their season 5-11-3, and will see four seniors graduate from CSU-Pueblo.
