The Colorado State University-Pueblo women’s basketball team (15-5 overall, 12-4 RMAC) fell short to the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (16-4 overall, 13-3 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game, 47-37, on Saturday, Feb. 9.
The Thunderwolves missed shots and plenty of opportunities in this game. Throughout the game the Thunderwolves were able to get open, but could not sink any shots.
The top performer for CSU-Pueblo was Paige Ramm, wing, who scored eight points and got nine rebounds. The rest of the team struggled to produce, however the game was not out of reach for the Thunderwolves until the final minutes.
“We just have to bounce back from this, because we don’t have very many games left in the season,” Ramm said. “We have to put our focus on this next week of practice and win the rest of our games.”
With six minutes left in the first half, the Thunderwolves tied the game for the first and only time during the game. The halftime stats did not look good for the Thunderwolves, as the team had more rebounds than points and UCCS had a 28-20 lead.
The team came in the second half and continued to miss shots, as the Thunderwolves did not make a field goal for the first seven minutes of the half. The final stats revealed the shooting slump, as the team only made 12 of the attempted 55 shots.
“I am very disappointed. UCCS came out more aggressive than us, and that’s bad for a coach to see,” coach Kip Drown said. “We let them set the pace for the game and that was our biggest mistake.”
This loss meant a drop in the RMAC standings, but the team only dropped one spot. The team is now ranked No. 4 in the standings, behind UCCS, Metro State and No. 7 Colorado Mesa.
The Thunderwolves’ five game winning streak was ended on Saturday night, while the UCCS won its seventh straight game.
Among the six games left of the women’s basketball regular season schedule, two games against top RMAC opponents remain. The Thunderwolves travel to Fort Lewis College (12-8, 11-5 RMAC) on Feb. 15 and to Metro State (16-6, 14-3 RMAC) on March 1.
The game against Fort Lewis will begin at 5:30 p.m., in Durango, Colo. The game can be followed on the CSU-Pueblo athletics website, gothunderwolves.com
