“Students have more power than they think, especially when they use it,” Vashti Trujillo, a CSU Pueblo student said upon receiving the Associated Student Government (ASG) Executive Member of the Year award at the Student Leadership & Involvement Awards ceremony.
Annually, CSU Pueblo announces the nominees of several different awards to distinguish the campus’ most involved organizations and outstanding leadership. These nominations come from across campus, with a committee of students and staff deciding the winners. This year’s awards ceremony was hosted in the Occhiato Student Center (OSC) Ballroom on April 9.
The awards offer students a chance to be recognized for their leadership and efforts on campus. Trujillo noted how the award has been meaningful to her work over her time at CSU Pueblo.
“It reflects the work I’ve put into advocating for students and being consistent in showing up for my role,” Trujillo said. “It also represents the team and community I’ve worked with; none of this happens alone.”
Trujillo has acted as the Vice President of ASG in the 2025 – 2026 year, a role that required advocating for students and quality-of-life on campus to be improved through campus policy. Additionally, she does a variety of extracurricular work both on campus and in the community that focuses on youth voices, equity, and public policy.
Many students who won similar awards have also been significant contributors to campus and community collaboration and outreach.
“Don’t underestimate your voice,” Vashti said in regards to how students can become involved in projects and groups they care about. “Start small and just show up. You don’t need to have everything figured out to get involved.”
