WACO, Texas (GoThunderWolves.com – Oct. 15, 2012) CSU-Pueblo attained a number-one national ranking for just the second time in school history, weighing in at the top position in the latest AFCA/USA Today Division II Coaches’ Poll.
The ThunderWolves received 23 of 30 possible first place votes in the poll, vaulting it to its second first-place ranking in school history. Closing out the 2011 regular season, CSU-Pueblo was also ranked tops in the country.
The ranking marks the fifth time in school history that it has been ranked at second or higher (an RMAC record) and the 14th straight week the ThunderWolves have been ranked in the nation’s top ten, second most in RMAC history (Chadron State boasts 20 such rankings from 2006 to 2008).
The ranking is also noteworthy, as it marks the first time since the school became a four-year institution in 1963 that any athletic program has been ranked number-one in the nation at any point in consecutive seasons.
Pending the outcome of the other major Division II football poll, the D2Football.com poll, slated to be released Tuesday, CSU-Pueblo could enjoy its first unanimous number-one ranking in school history.
In 2011, the ThunderWolves were only ranked number-one in one of the two major polls.
