The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities is offering six scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students at Colorado State University-Pueblo, ranging from $1,000 to $2,750.

However, the deadline for applications is fast approaching and must be completed by Friday, May 28, to be considered for any of the scholarships.

All applicants must meet three general criteria in order to be considered for any of the scholarships. The criteria are as follows and can be found on the HACU website: students must demonstrate financial need and be eligible for Federal Financial Aid, students must meet the specific criteria for the scholarships that they are applying to, and students must attend a HACU-member college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico at the time the application is completed.

Applicants do not need to be Hispanic to apply for any of the HACU scholarships, the HACU website states. Scholarships being offered by HACU are as follows:

• The Aetna Nursing Scholarship, worth $2,500, is available to full-time or part-time undergraduates attending a two or four-year HACU-member institution. Those interested must be pursuing a degree in nursing and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Winners of the scholarship must attend HACU’s Annual Conference Student Track in San Diego, Sept. 18 to 20.
• The Deloitte Scholars Program, worth $2,200, is available to full-time undergraduate students with a declared major in accounting. Those interested must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above and must be classified with sophomore or junior standing.
• The Lockheed Martin Scholarship, worth $2,750, is available to full-time undergraduates with a declared major in electrical engineering, computer science or computer engineering. Those interested must attend a four-year HACU-member institution, be interested in Lockheed Martin employment and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• The Office Depot Scholarships, worth $1,120, is available to full-time or part-time undergraduate students currently attending a four-year HACU-member institution. Those interested must have a declared major in business, international business, marketing, merchandising or information technology, and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
• The United Health Foundation Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Scholarship, worth $2,000, is available to undergraduate or graduate students with a declared major in clinical psychology, dental technician, nursing, dental or pre-dental, optometry or pre-optometry, medicine or pre-medicine, pharmacy or pre-pharmacy, physician assistant, public health, mental health or behavioral health. Those interested must attend a two or four-year HACU-member institution and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Recipients of the scholarship will also have to submit a professional resume and participate in a pre and post scholarship survey.

• The HACU/Wal-Mart Achievers Scholarship, worth $1,000, is available to undergraduate or graduate students attending a two or four-year HACU-member institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Those interested must have a declared major in business administration, general management, retail management, food merchandising or any related major. In addition to these requirements, students must be interested in retail and be comfortable working while still attending school.

Those interested in applying for any of the scholarships must register on the organization’s website. After making a profile, students can log in to the site and apply for the scholarships that match their provided information.

Applicants will be contacted by e-mail in late August or early September to verify application status. Both scholarship recipients and non-recipients will be contacted to verify the status of their application, the HACU website states.

Along with five other colleges in Colorado: Adams State College, Community College of Denver, Otero Junior College, Pueblo Community College and Trinidad State Junior College, the HACU website states, CSU-Pueblo is federally recognized as a Hispanic-serving institution.

Designation as a Hispanic-serving institution occurs when total Hispanic enrollment is equal to 25 percent of the total enrollment of both full-time and part-time students, at the undergraduate or graduate level, as reported by the HACU website.

CSU-Pueblo also received the Outstanding HACU-Member Institution Award at the organization’s 22nd Annual Conference in Denver, in 2008.

Although HACU started off with only 18 institutions when it was founded in 1986, it now consists of nearly 450 colleges and universities in the United States, Puerto Rico, Latin America, Spain and Portugal, the HACU website states.
