Pack try to build on strong pitching performance

Metro State is considered one of the top teams in the country, coming into this weekend’s four-game set with the Pack ranked 13th in the country. But with an 8-6 win over the Pack Sunday, the ThunderWolves tried not to make excuses as their losing streak extended to 11.

Pack starter Dustin Timmins pitched well in six innings of work, only allowing four hits and striking out nine. But he had control problems, walking six batters and giving up seven runs, six of which were earned.

Meanwhile, the Pack hitters were only able to muster eight hits, led by a 2-for-4 performance by second baseman, Mike Sanchez, who scored two runs, as well.

The Pack sweep comes in a weekend when the Pack’s maligned pitching rotation was drastically shuffled from last weekend’s most recent edition. Only number-one starter Mario Mattivi remained in his same spot, while last week’s number-four, Jesus Hernandez, moved up to number two, and two Colorado natives, Alamosa’s Timmins and Pueblo County High School grad, Scott Harshman, got the nod in games three and four. In three of the four games, the Pack gave up 10 runs or more.

The ThunderWolves, though, will try to build on the better performance in game four of the series, in which the team was but a few mistakes away from a win, when they depart for Las Cruces, N.M. to take on Division I team New Mexico State University on Tuesday and Wednesday.
