The ThunderWolves volleyball team sent the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks home with one win out of four matches played Friday, Oct. 21.

The ThunderWolves started off slow but made a quick comeback early in the first match, tying the score 6-6. They never fell behind more than two points and came out winning the match 25-18.

In the second match, the ThunderWolves worked to keep the game within their grasp. The score stayed close until the Mavericks tied the score 13-13, but the ThunderWolves didn’t fall behind again and won the match 25-19.

During match three, it was hard to find the ThunderWolves who played in the previous matches. When the score became 2-7, in favor of the Mavericks, it became evident that the ThunderWolves were in need of a pick-me-up. They had a hard time finding their resolve when the score reached 3-13, and lost the match 25-13.

The fourth match brought back the enthusiasm and energy that the ThunderWolves were lacking in the third game. They started off in the lead of the Mavericks by at least five points the whole match. When the score reached 23-11, it proved hard for the ThunderWolves to get the final two points they needed to finish the match, but they were able to pull off the win 25-15.

The ThunderWolves put up good numbers Friday night with 61 digs, 19 taken by senior Ashley Michel, and 18 total blocks for CSU-Pueblo. Ten of the blocks made were by senior Bernadette Pitre. The ThunderWolves also had a .142 hitting percentage, with senior Alea Wildman taking the lead in kills with 13.

As of Friday night, the Lady ThunderWolves have five games left in the season and their record is 12-10. Their last home game was Tuesday, Oct. 25, against Western State University, which is a conference game and the Fifth Annual “Block Out Breast Cancer” awareness game. Half of the proceeds will be donated to St. Mary Corwin’s Breast Center of Excellence campaign. 

The ThunderWolves have two more conference games against Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands in early November.
