Stacey Daberkow’s senior recital will be held Nov. 1 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Hoag Recital Hall. The songs she will be singing are a compilation of all the pieces she’s sang in her vocal classes throughout her college career.
The songs she has chosen are a variety of opera, Broadway, classical and brogue. Daberkow is feeling extremely confident about this performance, she said.
Leading up to the end of the semester, music majors all over campus are starting to hang posters promoting their senior recitals and Daberkow is no exception.
Daberkow chose to major in music education due to the fact that when she first started college she was and elementary education major with a minor in music, but then realized her love for music was greater and switched the two around, she said.
The voice teachers she’s met at college have really encouraged and influenced her, Daberkow said. Betsy Barto, a professor of applied voice, is really in sync with how left-brained Daberkow is and really helped her take a step back from her performances to see them in a different way.
Another influence on her vocals is the music Daberkow listens to, she said. Daberkow listens to everything from classic rock to indie music, including Modest Mouse and Spoon. Daberkow is an avid listener of the Beatles but lately she’s been listening to a lot of Joan Jett, she said.
For the most part Daberkow has always been musical. Her family always told her that she was a good singer while she was growing up, and in the eighth grade she landed a solo in her school’s Christmas program. Holding a microphone just felt right to her, she said.
One of the many performance accomplishments Daberkow is proud of is having the lead role in “Guys and Dolls” when she was in high school.
“It was an exciting way to start musical theater,” Daberkow said. “I’m not really an outgoing person but I like being able to be different characters in offbeat pieces that no one’s heard of.”
Solo recitals are a good way to mix things up in Daberkow’s performances, she said.
“Showcases are a bunch of solos rolled into one but I can do more musical theater in showcases than I can when I do recitals,” Daberkow said.
When it comes down to choosing between performing or going after a teaching career, Daberkow would choose performing, she said. Smiling, she realized that she would actually probably take the road most traveled and teach.
“You can perform while you teach. That would be a better choice for me, plus I love kids,” she said.
When Daberkow graduates in May she plans on going on the great journey all college graduates endure; the job search. If she can’t find a job she hopes to get a masters degree or another undergraduate degree, she said.
