Black Student Union (BSU) is wrapping up a successful celebration of Black History Month with its annual Gospel Extravaganza this Saturday, March 1.
The Gospel Extravaganza is a free concert created for students and faculty to get together and celebrate while enjoying uplifting music and shared positivity.
“It’s a way for us to come together and say ‘We did it!’” said Emmanuel Jeanmarie, president of BSU.
This year’s event will feature 14 performances, made up of musicians and dancers from all over Colorado. They will be performing multiple genres including hip-hop, rap, traditional gospel and contemporary gospel.
The Sankey Sisters, a local gospel group that formed in 2010, will be the featured special guests this year.
“You couldn’t put a price on this talent,” Jeanmarie said.
Jesse Sena is leading the production of the event. This will be Sena’s second year as producer for the concert. He brings the experience of producing musical events since the 1980s.
“I have two goals when organizing an event: I want people to feel safe, and I want them to leave inspired,” said Sena. “It’ll get you moving.”
Sena explained his intention to bring diversity to the musical selections of this year’s Gospel Extravaganza, creating a space where anyone will feel welcome.
Sena and Jeanmarie encourage all members of the community to enjoy the event from 5-8 p.m. in Hoag Hall.
“Show up, and be inspired,” Sena said.
