Singles don’t be SAD this Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day may be the worst day of the year for people that are single. It reminds them they are single and they are one of the unfortunate few not getting flowers or candy from an adorable person.

But singles rejoice, there is now a holiday just for you.

Singles Awareness Day, or SAD, is a funny holiday celebrated on Feb. 14. Some who celebrate this witty holiday even choose to celebrate it on Feb. 13 or Feb. 15 to get away from the commercialism that Valentine’s Day brings. A typical greeting on this day would be, “Happy SAD!”

The holiday is an alternative to Valentine’s Day for those who are not involved in a romantic relationship. Some who observe the holiday do it because they think that Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday, or for other reasons.

On Singles Awareness Day, single people get together to celebrate their single status. Some people want to remind romantic couples they don’t need to be in a relationship to celebrate life. Some declarations of this holiday are thought to be examples of self-depreciating humor.

Some other countries are creating their own version of this liberating holiday.

Unit Solo, a club in South Korea, has created a movement against public displays of affection.

The Japanese created the “Lovers Go Die” club. The club is against unmoral or materialistic couples.

The idea comes from the manga “Ping-Pong Club.” In the manga, one of the members betrayed their table-tennis team members and went on a date with a girl. The other members form the “Lovers Go Die” club to try to break up the couple.

The club takes a stand against the unmoral relationships, including multi-sex partners, one night stands, money-oriented relationships and dishonest relationships. They encourage couples not to express their love in a materialistic way.

The club uses non-violent ways to make unmoral couples break up, while giving best wishes to couples who have true love.

“We oppose the commercialized Valentine’s Day and those disgusting couples who demonstrate pornography on the street.” according to the second president of the club, Wu Yuen.

The “Lovers Go Die” club believes the celebration of Valentine’s Day is a corporate marketing strategy. They discourage the romantic dinner, overpriced flower and fancy gift. The club hopes that couples can break the consumerism.

The club even had their own set of rules to manage the members’ behavior.

All members must not say anything disrespectful about the opposite sex, not support any unmoral relationships, stay in peace with other groups, organizations and clubs and go about the right way to berate a couple that go onto the wrong track.

People who want to join the club have to be single, have a grudge against immoral couples and not have any bad records in love affairs.

The goal of Singles Awareness Day is to let single people have celebrations, get-togethers and exchange gifts with single friends.

There are some things that people can do for themselves to stay in good spirits during this would-be depressing day. People can pamper themselves, celebrate with friends, help the community and just think positive.

If you’re happy to be single, Singles Awareness Day is your day to tell the world. The dates are coming up, so start planning your parties now!
