DVD review: “The Midnight Meat Train”

“OH, THE HORROR!” That’s all I have to say about this movie! “The Midnight Meat Train” took me back to my childhood days where I was afraid to do anything after watching a horror movie.

I know what you’re thinking to yourselves, “This movie sounds like an adult movie.” By adult movie, I mean X rated. Yes, I have heard all the side comments about the title. However, this movie will make you not want to ride the subway or any train station ever again.

Remember how Freddy made you never want to sleep again? Remember how Jason made you never want to go to camp again? Remember how Candyman made you never want to face the mirror or go to the bathroom without the door being open? Well, for the new generation we have Mahogany. Mahogany will make you never want to ride the subway or train system ever again. Never in this lifetime did I expect someone to come along and strike fear in the eyes of millions.

If you can recall, “The Midnight Meat Train” made number three on my horror top ten list. “The Midnight Meat Train” was meant to be released in May of last year. It was supposed to reach nearly 3,000 theaters nationwide. However, thanks to powers-that-be, “The Midnight Meat Train” was released in August to a limited 100 theaters. To make matters worse, they were shown at discount theaters nationwide.

This past Tuesday, “The Midnight Meat Train” was finally released on DVD and Blu-Ray. Instead of being rated R, it was unrated.

You must be thinking to yourself, “What isn’t unrated now-a-days?”

Well, I’ll answer that question for you. I purchased this movie. As a matter of fact, I bought three of them. I watched “The Midnight Meat Train” with the audio commentary on. The director, Ryuhei Kitamura, and the executive producer, Clive Barker, provided audio commentary. Ryuhei Kitamura points out why it was unrated. In Kitamura’s explanation, the death and fight sequences are longer, bloodier and more graphic. In this movie, you’ll see body parts being removed.

Those who did the special effects, lighting and CGI work did one amazing job. “The Midnight Meat Train” is dark, grimy and gritty. Everyone on the screen was important no matter if they were on the screen for five seconds or five minutes. We knew who they were and what their purpose was.

Like anything Clive Barker does, there is no typical “dumb” person in his movies. Those that get in Mahogany’s way did not know what was coming to them. Three were brave enough to do battle with him.

If you’re in for a scare, I highly recommend that you buy or rent “The Midnight Meat Train”. It will guarantee to bring back the scariness of yester-year without the “dumb” victim.
