A classic movie remake earned the top spot at the box offices last weekend.”

Race to Witch Mountain,” starring Dwayne Johnson and AnnaSophia Robb, made $25 million in its opening weekend.

The film is a remake of the 1975 movie “Escape to Witch Mountain.” It is also based on the book “Escape to Witch Mountain” by Alexander Key.

The film is about a Las Vegas cab driver who, with the help of a UFO expert, helps protect two siblings with paranormal powers from an organization who wants to use their powers for their evil plans.

Johnson plays a down on his luck cab driver, Jack Bruno, who while driving in the city, finds out the siblings snuck into the back of his cab.

The kids, played by Robb and Alexander Ludwig, want him to drive them in a dilapidated cabin in the middle of the desert.

Once they are at the cabin, the kids find a sensor which is the proof they need to show earth is a place where their kind can live peacefully. Meanwhile, men who work for the government are hot on their trail, trying to locate the siblings after finding their space craft.

The kids need to get to a secret military base called Witch Mountain to get their spaceship, but not before government officials find them first.

This movie is the poster child of predictable movies with too many catch phrases. Maybe the fact that this is a Disney movie is to blame.

The whole story line is something seen in numerous flicks. A man with a bad past and no heart runs into cute kids who need help, hates them at first, and then likes them enough to help them.

Is there need to mention the fact that he meets a girl that’s in for their cause and he falls in love with her?

Johnson’s character even plays with the predictability with the line, “Don’t go into the pimped out fridge, Jack.”

Johnson’s performance was good overall, though it might have been tarnished by the bad catch phrases. Maybe he was only cast because he does really good fight scenes.

Robb’s performance was really good too. She shows she is a really versatile actress after playing Violet Beauregarde in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and Leslie Burke in “Bridge to Terabithua.”

The film was also amusing with the appearances of two Hollywood heavyweights.

Cheech Martin, of Cheech and Chong, was funny as the mechanic.

Gary Marshall, who has written and produced many works including episodes of Laverne and Shirley as well as directed movies like “Pretty Woman” and “Princess Diaries” , added another role to his acting resume. He was very amusing playing a doctor.

It seems as if the producers and writers were trying to make a very big deal about this remake by hiring these actors. Though it’s great to see them working, they could have saved their money and gotten actors who aren’t as popular. It wouldn’t have made any difference in the film as a whole.

Other parts in the movie were fun, but still lacked any awe factor.

Some special effects seemed cheap throughout the film. It seemed like the studio spent just enough money for you to just get the idea something was about destroyed.

The only really good part was the ending, and not because the movie was over.

 A couple of scenes and special effects at the end made it seem as if the studio cared about the feature and actually took the time and spent more money on those scenes.

This film has the possibility to harbor more arguments about its filmmaking than those listed. It’s safe to say some classics are meant to stay classics for the sake of original films integrity and actors’ careers.
