The Pack football team concluded its 2016 offseason training as well as spring football April 22 at the annual CSU-Pueblo Football Spring Game. The team had been training since January and have also had football practice the last month.

This spring was one of the most important for The Pack in the last few years because of the amount of new players put into starting roles. Both offense and defense found themselves leaning on younger players to step up and become leaders.

The Spring Game was the last chance for players to show themselves to the coaching staff until camp starts this upcoming fall season. New starters like defensive lineman Ian Kelly showed massive improvement from last season and even won defensive lineman of the spring season. While more experienced players have showed their stripes, a number of freshman have caught the coaching staff’s eye like defensive back Emory Taylor.

There were two teams for the Spring Game consisting of all the players on the team. One team wore red and the other wore white. The red team had a very dominating performance and won 28­8. Although the box score showed a one sided game, both teams struggled on offense and had plenty of turnovers. As usual the defense was lighting it up and was flying to the ball and even scored.

There were many questions left unanswered at the Spring Game, and none bigger than who will end up being the starting quarterback back going into fall. Both Rex Dausin and A.J. Thompson had multiple turnovers and did not have amazing games. Thompson did move the offense better this game but Dausin has had a more impressive Spring when looking at every practice.

This competition will still be the biggest question mark the Pack has going into the first game next season.
