The TODAY’s Spotlight on Reading/Writing features CSU-Pueblo faculty, staff and students sharing their reading and writing experiences. The column is co-sponsored by the English and Foreign Languages Department and the English Club. This week’s feature highlights history major Ronnie Hawthorne.

Name/department/educational background: Ronnie Hawthorne, history, I have been out of school for the last 25 years serving in the Army. I am a freshman close to being a sophomore.

What has been your greatest success in writing? (Personal writing, collaborative writing, completing a project or book, etc.): The greatest success in writing I would have to say was when I was able to write and publish a complete plan on “how to plan and execute a gunnery in the light cavalry world.”

What do you struggle with in writing and how do you tackle that challenge? The one thing that I struggle with the most in writing is my grammar. The way I have been able to overcome that is by having my mother-in-law and wife do my proofreading for me.

What’s your favorite book of all time? Author? My favorite book at this time would have to be “Without Remorse” by Tom Clancey

What are you currently reading? Author? The current author that I am reading right now is Shelby Foote, he is a historical writer.

What’s your favorite guilty reading pleasure? When I don’t want to have to think about what I am reading but want something to take my mind off of the day events I will normally read a magazine of some sort.

Do you have a favorite word or quotation and who is the author? My favorite quote would have to come from David Copperfield’s book Great Expectations: ” it is the best of times, and it is the worst of times.” That quote is just a true statement of life in general; it is neither just one or the other.
