Campus shines light on domestic violence

October is ‘Domestic Violence Month’ and CSU-Pueblo will be bringing awareness to this issue through activities and displays on campus throughout the month.

CSU-Pueblo will host four events in October that will bring attention to the issue, as well as call attention to individuals and organizations that have made efforts to stop domestic violence.

The kick-off to the awareness month will be an event, called “Walk a Mile in her Shoes,” which requires participants to wear women’s footwear for a walk through Pueblo to support the victims of domestic violence in our community.  The event will start at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1 at the Riverwalk in downtown Pueblo.

The Diversity Resource Center of CSU-Pueblo and the Pueblo Rape Crisis Center will co-host a presentation about the rates of sexual violence in Pueblo and the help available to victims in the Diversity Resource Center in the OUC suite 031 at noon on Friday, Oct. 22.

The DRC will also team up with the Pueblo YWCA to discuss intimate partner domestic violence and resources available to those victims in the DRC at noon on Thursday, Oct. 28.

The last event to raise awareness is the “Empty Chair Project.” Empty chairs will be placed around campus to represent victims of domestic violence. The chairs will be accompanied by domestic violence statistics, resources, and information about how students can get involved with the fight to end domestic violence.

For more information about domestic violence awareness activities on campus contact Fawn Amber Montoya at 549-2620 or [email protected]

If you or someone you know is the victim of domestic violence, contact the YWCA Family Crisis Center at 719-545-8195, or visit them at 801 N. Santa Fe in Pueblo, Colo.

I hope those conducting the events recount all of the various forms of domestic violence…it’s not all about hitting. Psychological, emotional and mental abuse are also domestic violence, but it’s the unseen version. It is just as important for people to be aware of the warning signs, not only for themselves, but what to listen for from friends, and to know how to help them.
