Valentine’s Day – past and present

So we all know that Valentine’s Day is a day of love and romance right? According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine’s cards are sent a year.  This makes it the second largest card-sending holiday a year only following Christmas. But how did it start? I’m sure we don’t think that people started sending cards on Feb. 14 because they felt like it.

One legend suggests that St. Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome.  The Emperor at the time, Claudius II, decided that single men were much better soldiers than married men and outlawed all young men from getting married because they were his potential soldiers. Valentine decided that this was unjust and started marrying young couples in secret, thus beginning the holiday of love.

Wondering what to do this Valentine’s Day?  CSU-Pueblo students were polled on their favorite Valentine’s Day movies.  So whether it’s with a boyfriend or girlfriend or just some friends, sit back and enjoy one of these romantic movies that ranked in the top five.

“So what happens after he climbs up the tower and rescues her?”

    “She rescues him right back.”

Recognize the quote? Number five on the list is the classic romantic comedy about a straight-talking prostitute and how she fell in love with a cold businessman.  “Pretty Woman” is a classic.

Number four on the list is the 1961 classic that gave Audrey Hepburn her fame.

“People do fall in love. People do belong to each other.  Because that’s the only chance we’ve got for real happiness.”

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a true Valentine’s Day go-to movie.

The overwhelming pick for the guys is the 2004 comedy about a porn star who moves next door to a nerdy teenager and what do you know, they fall in love.  Hey, who says Valentine’s Day is a girls’ holiday? “The Girl Next Door” is one the guys can enjoy too.

What 1980’s teenage love story doesn’t star Molly Ringwald? The number 2 pick is no exception.

“You said you couldn’t be with someone who didn’t believe in you. Well I believed in you. I just didn’t believe in me. I love you… always.”

“Pretty in Pink” can be appreciated by any guy who thinks a girl is out of his league and any girl who thinks that social cliques can’t be overcome by love.

So can you guess what the clear number one choice is by now?

“They didn’t agree on much. In fact they rarely agreed on anything. They fought all the time and they challenged each other every day.”

Although “The Notebook” only came out in 2004, it was by far the favorite.  It’s a love story that anyone can appreciate.

So whether you have a Valentine or not, these movies can help to remind you what St. Valentine’s holiday is all about. Happy Valentine’s Day.
